UNfocusing: Introduction to Focusing as your inner GPS

Focusing is the mindful practice of using our bodily felt sense to guide our actions, moment by moment.

Paradoxically, we start this process by “UNfocusing.”

This may seem strange, so it helps to use an analogy. Think about how a GPS works. For the GPS to change its course, it takes a disruption, for instance, you veer off the road. Then, the GPS needs to take stock of where it is and recompute the itinerary.

We, humans, are pretty much the same in this respect. We go on autopilot unless there is a disruption. If we want to go beyond autopilot, we need to create a situation where our inner GPS needs to re-orient.

Our inner GPS does not usually speak loud. So, most people are usually not aware of the signals it sends. They are neither loud sirens nor flashing lights, but subtle sensations.

When we turn our attention inward, we start to notice these subtle sensations. “Refocusing” happens organically, as the subtle sensations gradually come into focus and become meaningful.

Gene Gendlin discovered this process, explored it, and described ways to help make it happen. Now, decades later, neuroscience has added to our understanding of it. So has the experience of tens of thousands of Focusers (probably hundreds of thousands… Who knows? Focusers are not bean counters).

Why this class?

It is now simpler than ever to access our inner GPS. This introductory class presents a down-to-earth perspective on Focusing as an organic process that we can easily access.

It is suitable for beginners as well as for Focusers who wish to gain a new perspective on Focusing.
